May Mixed Doubles Tournament Result

Congratulations to all our participants in this weekend’s MVTC September 2013 Mixed Doubles Tournament. The weather was perfect—and we had a competitive, yet fun day of good sportsmanship and great tennis enhanced by terrific food!
For those of you awaiting the results with bated breath… results on listed on the attached draws. For those needing only the abridged version:
Division I (7.5+):
Main Draw: Number 2 seeds Sam Leong & Ying Zhou bested Mike & Catherine Puzon, 6-4, 6-1.
Consolation Draw: Danny Strom & Nora Hayward earned an easy win over Madan Venugopal & Debra Vernon who were forced to default early in the match to avoid exacerbating a potential injury.
Division II (6.0-7.0):
Main Draw: Number 1 seeds Roy Molseed & Emi Iizuka racked up a win over Karl Mellon & Sue Taylor, 6-2, 6-2.
Consolation Draw: Mary Watanabe & emergency sub Mike Siew dispatched Nad Karim & Melanie Homan who retired 6-3, 6-3.
Sincere Thanks to all our participants this month— and especially:
· Thanks to Mike Siew for rushing over to Rengstorff to be an emergency substitute for Claudio Gonzales, —thereby allowing us to maintain 2 full draws all day. Our sympathies to Claudio, who suffered a muscular injury early in the second set of the first round. HEAL FAST CLAUDIO—we’ll miss you on the courts!!

· Special thanks go out to our Food Director Catherine Puzon, who organized and provided food for us—generating a tasty, and definitely appreciated repast!!

· Finally—thank you to everyone who showed up early to help set-up… and those of you who pitched in to help put things away: Tony Serksnis, Mike Puzon, Noah Banks, Roy Molseed, Claudio Gonzales, Karl Mellon, Solomon Tan, Catherine Puzon, Cindy Jeung--and everyone else I forgot to mention--for making the day run smoothly!

Finally…We managed to strong-arm most of the winners into posing for the usual post-finals photos. Those photos should be posted on the MVTC website in the near future. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to badger Danny Strom & Nora Haywood into their photo-op—and likely ruined their chance to be famous!! SORRY!!!! On the other hand, they now have a great incentive to win the next tourney….
Thanks for a great day,

Katharine Altemus
Tournament Director
