President’s message

Spring is Coming

It’s time to dry out and get into the sun! We have a lot of great events planned for MVTC members this spring. If you haven’t yet joined, please take advantage of the March Madness Membership promotion for Mountain View Residents. To encourage friends and family to join, we are offering a discount of $15 for one or $20 for two memberships. For that price you get an entire year’s worth of tennis activities.

Our Spring General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 22nd from 6:00 – 9:00pm, at the Senior Center in Mountain View (266 Escuela Avenue, Mountain View, CA, 94040). We are extremely pleased to have Joel Drucker, one of the world’s leading tennis writers, as our guest speaker. Last year he was named a historian-at-large by the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Drucker’s tennis work spans the worlds of professional and recreational tennis – history, news, player profiles, psychology, instruction, travel, humor and participatory experiences. Come hear his remarks and enjoy food and fellowship with your tennis pals. There will be a food drive at this event, please bring non-perishable food to donate and we’ll get it to the Community Services Agency.

The tennis tournament season kicks off with the ever popular Team Tennis Tournament on Saturday, March 25th from 8:30 – 1:00pm at Rengstorff Park. All levels are encouraged to participate and lunch will be provided. This is always a lively and social tournament.

Drop-In Tennis is back! Come join us at the Cuesta Courts on Friday, March 31st from 7:00 – 9:00pm, (courts 10 and 11). We’ll head to Mountain Mike’s for PIZZA afterwards.

Lastly, we’ll be taking part in the Mountain View Parade on Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00 – 1:00pm on Castro Street in Mountain View. If you are interested in participating, drop me an email at president@mvtc.net

The Board has been working hard to plan a fun filled year of activities. Check out the MVTC Calendar.

See you on and off the courts, let’s have some fun!

USTA News

The club has two teams currently in first place in USTA play for the 40+ season. Jill Nagahara-Evans’ women's 3.5 team boasts a 5-2 record and is well positioned to go to playoffs and beyond. The mixed 3.5 team led by John Farcich and Liz Chambers holds a commanding 6-1 lead in the flight and is a shoo-in to move on to post-season play.

Heading into the Adult 18+ season this spring the club will sponsor 6 teams ranging from the 3.5 level on up to 4.5. It’s good to see the 4.5 level of play at home courts at Rengstorff since it’s been awhile since the club has hosted a team at this level. Missing is someone to captain at the 3.0 level. Let’s hope we can make that happen in future league play.

Thanks go to Jill Nagahara-Evans, John Farcich, Todd Young, Ellen Gazen and Warren Yamaguchi for captaining 40+ teams this year. Thanks also to Todd, Warren, Jill, Ellen, Hamid Rafiei and Katja DeRoos for leading teams this spring.
