President’s Message
Dear MVTC members,

This has been a busy and eventful year for MVTC with 6 tournaments so far, over 3 or 4 USTA teams registered per league season, and over 250+ members signed up for this year. This compares with 177 members for 2013 and 239 for 2011. Our social activity has also increased with several food donation drives and a Tennis Clinic. All of these augur well for our 50th anniversary coming up in 2016.

However, some of the Board members who contributed to the success of MVTC in the last year have decided to step down for personal reasons. Jo-Ann Smith who was our Club Secretary in 2014 stepped down in August 2015. Jo-Ann helped bring back MVTC from the brink of a shutdown last year and set it on a strong footing. She stepped in this summer and took on a lot of responsibility while I was away on vacation. We will miss her warmth and energy.

We have some upcoming openings on the Board. I would like to take this opportunity to request all of you to consider volunteering for Board positions to take MVTC to the next level. We could use Board members in all roles.

As a non-profit Board member of several years, I can tell you that the experience is valuable in building up leadership skills and also gives you the opportunity to contribute to the Community. Our club is as strong as you, the members, want to make it. So, please let me know if you would like to participate.

In spite of our rapid growth this year, we are very close to the limits of non-resident membership. We cannot add more non-residents till we add more Mountain View residents as members. This is required by the club by-laws and mandated by the City of Mountain View. So, we have instituted a promotion to add new Mountain View resident members for free for the rest of 2015. Please help enroll more resident members.

Finally, I request all of you to get involved in MVTC activities to make the club even more vibrant and successful. Please contact me or other MVTC Board members if you are interested

Regards,
Madan Venugopal

Catch up tournament news
June 2015
We had a well run, men’s doubles tournament (ladies where were you?) thanks to Tournament Director Jeremy Chen. There were lots of third sets being played on this HOT summer day. Mallika Ramamurthy was the Food Coordinator, and she put out a delicious spread with the help of club members Myrna Irigon and Sameer Ladiwala.

July 2015
We had a fun mixed doubles tournament headed by non-other than Jeremy Chen who took on the tasks of Tournament Director and Food Chair. Thanks to the club members that also chipped in to make it a success!

August 2015
Team tennis/Quad tennis format with club members from San Carlos, Cupertino and MVTC. Players were divided up into four teams North, South, East and West that was comprised of both male and female 3.0-4.5 players from all clubs. Captain Perry’s team eeked out a win with 311 points, Captain Douglas placed second with 302 points, followed by Captain Gary’s team and Captain Catherine’s team in fourth. We had one casualty, which included a broken finger from a fall that included an out reached hand to break the fall- OUCH! We hope Bill recovers soon. Thanks to the Tournament Director Patsy Duke and to Food Chair Debbie Ryan. A shout out to Jeremy for supplying the ice, to Jill for bringing the pasta salad, and to all of the Club members who helped set up and clean up for the tournament.

Tennis Social A Swinging Success
"August MVTC Clinic & Social"

On August 14th, sixteen MVTC members enjoyed a warm Friday evening tennis clinic with Cuesta professionals, John Togasaki and Tina Okawa. After an hour plus of drills and camaraderie, everyone met outside on the Cuesta Clubhouse deck area and continued their camaraderie over Friday evening refreshments and tasty snacks. With smooth jazz music playing in the  background, new and old friends lingered under the night sky as the evening temps cooled. Thank you MVTC members for coming out and enjoying this annual event.(yes. we plan to bring it back next year!) AND a very big thank you to John & Tina for sharing their excellent coaching skills and for  hanging out afterwards with the MVTC peeps. Hope to see more MVTC members at our Club sponsored events! We're here for YOU!

2015 MVTC Tournament Schedule
End of the season Grand Prix Invitational
Grand Prix Invitational is an additional Team Tennis event meant to reward members and non-members who have participated in MVTC tournaments in 2015 and earned enough Grand Prix Point to qualify. Points are rewarded based on participation (10 points) in events and the team’s final rankings (points varies) for each event.

Typically 40 points is enough to qualify someone for the Invitational, so that might translate to participating in 4 tournaments, a semi-final showing or team tennis win.

Don Gale, former head of M.V. Rec. and co-founder of MVTC along with Don Schaefer, recently passed away. He was a top tennis player who had won the Singles in one of the 1960 MV Open tennis events. He had been a teaching pro for many years. Our thoughts go out to his family.
